Closet Must-Haves Part 2: A Great Fitting Pair of Jeans

By Michelle, 21 May, 2010, No Comment

Paige320copyIt seems like a pretty basic concept and something that every woman knows but yet I am still amazed when I go out and see women wearing ill fitting jeans.  Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand that shopping for jeans can be just as painful as shopping for a swimsuit but with patience and a large selection of brands and cuts, you can find the best fitting and flattering jeans for you.

I personally can attest that in the past, I have fallen prey to purchasing the wrong jeans for me.  I would get frustrated and impatient and pick a pair that were “okay” and then when I wore them more and more, they either stretched out too much or were too snug to be comfortable.  Taking the time to try a number of brands and sizes can help you find the right fitting jean that will be a staple in your wardrobe.

The skinny on the Skinny… my take on the skinny jean trend

The skinny on the Skinny… my take on the skinny jean trend

In general, I really like skinny jeans. They are a versatile piece of your wardrobe, once you figure out how to wear them. They are my go-to jeans in the winter. Tuck them in to boots with a cute tank and cardigan and you are set for a great casual, but put together look.

Binge or Bargain: Black Tuxedo Jacket

By Michelle, 24 November, 2009, 22 Comments

Last year, I noticed many celebrities sporting the black Tuxedo Jacket with everything from jeans to a mini dress.  Now the black jacket has become a “must-have” for our closets.   If you can find a classic yet modern fit, it can be a ” go to” piece for many years to come.

Keep in mind…a proper fit is essential for this look to maintain a feminine sillouette and that extra touch to your outfit.  Your jacket should fit fairly snug but should not pull or gap at the bust.  If you are larger on top, fit the jacket to your bust and then have a tailor bring in the waist to maintain the snug fit and accentuate your waist.

So how much should a black tuxedo jacket cost you?  This is all dependent on your budget, of course.  I found 2 different jackets that I thought really captured the modern and feminine tuxedo look at 2 different price points.

I adore this Marc by Marc Jacobs Tuxedo Jacket featured on Piperlime.  I think it defines a modern yet classic look.  The darting around the middle instantly creates a small waistline, not matter what your size.   This jacket is $388 on Piperlime.  It is a classic piece that will last for seasons to come, but for some the initial investment might be a little more than what is comfortable.  Which prompted me to find this next example from Kohl’s…

This AB Studio Notch Collar Jacket from Kohl’s has similar styling with darting and also the addition of buttons around the waist to create a slimming effect.  I also think the notch-collar adds a little extra touch to the jacket, but would not be 531611considered too trendy.  This jacket is currently on sale at Kohl’s for $42.99.  Quite a deal when you consider that this jacket  from Kohl’s is a 89% savings over the Marc Jacobs jacket.

Both jackets really epitomize classic style that can work with many different pieces in your closet for years to come.

The un-MOM Jean

newdknikkiLet’s talk jeans, shall we? This is an area where so many women have problems with finding the right fit for their body style. We all need jeans that flatter us and make us feel great!

Some women are wearing the dreaded “mom” jeans, which nip in at the waist, have pleats, and make butts look huge (not to mention the 80’s tapered legs). Mom jeans are just wrong– Click here to see if you look like this in your jeans, or to have a laugh!

Women’s bodies change a lot after having babies, so you are not alone if you’ve discovered that your pre-pregnancy jeans just don’t look right anymore. It’s time to get some that really fit your body NOW! We’ve tried on loads of designer jeans in search of a great fit. Here are some tips:

  • Look for jeans with a low/medium rise. What is that, you may wonder? The top of the jeans starts a couple inches below your navel and covers your whole butt, including a bit above the crack–this helps when you are picking up the kids and prevents showing your thong or panties to the world!
  • Make sure the jeans fit your legs and hips. They should have a nice long length that allows for the tip of your shoe to show underneath. (Skinny jeans should be shorter for wearing with flats or tucking into boots, which is my personal fave–the skinny jeans pictured are by Joe’s).joes skinny
  • Many of us struggle with this: the jeans fit, but the waist is huge. Helpful Hint–have them tailored! Tailoring is essential in achieving the best fit. I’ve tailored many pants since having children, and feel great in having custom pieces that truly fit my body. You will too!
  • Look for pockets that emphasize or de-emphasize your derriere. If you have a full tush, go for pockets that are flat and cover most of it. Some pockets sit higher on the tush, which helps to visually lift it. If you have a flatter tush, go for pockets with a flap to visually give you more shape.

Dark wash jeans are very much en vogue right now because they flatter everyone, so you can never go wrong here. If you go lighter, remember the rules of fit and go for it!

My new favorite jeans for the best fit (pictured above left) are made by David Kahn Jeanswear, found at Nordstrom and, if you’re lucky, at Nordstrom Rack at a deep discount!
