When’s the right time for Night time?

By kristen, 29 June, 2010, No Comment

snookie-mainI’ve noticed a couple of women lately that have been dressed for evening during the day. I started to think “Is this okay?” Well, the answer is…NO!

Now, don’t get me wrong…I am a fan of dressing up, but to be wearing a flashy look during the day is just not appropriate.

I noticed a woman at my daughter’s daytime dance recital who looked like she should have been dressed for a nightclub. Come on, now…it’s a kids’ dance recital–not the Vegas strip!  The look I saw was something reminiscent of the show “Jersey Shore” that is tremendously popular for its tackiness and big hair (see photo to the right). The mom at the recital had big hair, an off the shoulder studded red top with short shorts plus very high heels. It was just plain tacky…unless, of course, she was going to her second job as an exotic dancer after the kids’ dance recital ;)

Keep your night time looks for the evening and you can’t go wrong. Appropriate looks for a daytime dance recital should look something like this, by Ann Taylor LOFT. This is a sophisticated and feminine look. This dress is comfortable also, which never hurts. It is accessorized with a cute flowered belt and strappy heels, but you could also wear this dress with flat sandals just as easily.

242939_3482_gmd323x335DO wear a more casual look for daytime–nothing over the top and flashy! I understand women want to look sexy, but subdued and classy is always a classic look for every woman.

Closet Must-Haves, Part 10, A Classic Tank Top

By kristen, 24 June, 2010, No Comment

gap white tankThere are days when your creativity is lacking and you need to pull together a quick outfit that’s a no-brainer. Where I live in Colorado, you really never know what the weather will be like in 15 minutes. So, layering is crucial and tank tops are  the perfect versatile piece for your wardrobe.

I love a classic white tank with jeans. It’s a simple, yet clean look and you can jazz it up with a great colored beaded necklace such as this one from Fantasy Jewlery Box. carissa chunky necklace fjbYou can also layer it up under a jacket, shirt or cardigan when it gets chilly.

I also love a tank with a sarong or cotton skirt for a bathing suit cover-up that works equally well poolside or having a cocktail at the pool bar.

Closet Must-Haves, Part 9: Scarves

By kristen, 15 June, 2010, No Comment

cassidy ruffle scarfScarves are a great item to have in your wardrobe. They can be used for warmth, as a necklace or as a pop of color added to an outfit. Whatever you use them for, scarves are a wardrobe must.

These looks are from Affordable Scarves, a website dedicated to scarves where you can find any type of scarf your heart desires. I found a couple of scarves that are cute for summer, since we are in the heat of summer right now. This first one is adorable with its thin stripes and soft material and would be great with a t shirt and boyfriend shorts.

This next one is a more sophisticated look and reminds one of a vacation–it is called Jamaican Breeze, after all ;) . I’d jamaicanbreezewear this with a white dress or top in the evening to keep the chill away. You can also wear a more flowy scarf like this as a headband or tied around your waist like a belt.

Check out the loose tie method of tying a scarf in this video post we did a while back. However you choose to wear a scarf, have fun accessorizing and send us suggestions on how you use them!

Fashion Do or Don’t: Boat Shoes

By kristen, 11 June, 2010, 2 Comments

I’ve been reading in many fashion magazines that boat shoes, aka “Top siders” are making a comeback. Yes, boat shoes: the moccasins with the white soles. Remember those from the “preppy” days? I once had a Preppy Handbook, and everybody preppy had a pair of these bad boys. Mostly in the traditional dark brown leather with white soles.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw them In Style this month–the bible for fashion! I was like…HUH?top sider platinum

Well, metallics and other cool colors (some in patent leather) make boat shoes a bit more modern, these by Sperry (who are one of the original designers of boat shoes). I ’ve seen some fashion forward celebs (such as Sienna Miller) sporting these shoes with rolled-up skinny jeans or cuffed shorts. Note: make sure they’re shorter shorts, not bermudas–to ensure a modern look.

DO pair them with the ever-popular striped nautical top with cuffed shorts.  Make this look work for your legs and you can’t go wrong.

Here’s another pair I found that are by Steve Madden, that are done in canvas and a bit more casualand less pricey at around $50. madden canvas

Most leather boat shoes are about $90, but can go upwards of $250 depending on what designer you desire.

Keep in mind that this (like most) trends is not likely to withstand the test of time. If you live in an area that you’re hanging out on boats or at marinas, do invest the money on a cute pair of boat shoes!

I don’t know if I’d do boat shoes–unless of course, I was on a boat! Hmmm, what do you think–are boat shoes a fashion do or don’t? Let us know.

Closet Must-Haves, Part 7: The Pencil Skirt

By kristen, 7 June, 2010, No Comment

When I am choosing an outfit for work or an evening event, many times I find myself reaching for a pencil skirt. Pencil skirts are very versatile and never go out of style; but best of all always look polished if worn correctly.

Wear a pencil skirt with a fitted blouse and/or a belted cardigan for a business look. You can easily adapt this daytime look for evening by adding an embellished tank or camisole and pairing it with some cool accessories (i.e., chandelier earrings, layered necklaces or bracelets and a modern clutch).

jcrewcoolpencilHere’s one look I love from J. Crew…it’s a way to wear a pencil skirt in a more casual way, would be great to meet friends for Happy Hour or to your kid’s school play. You could change out these sandals for a pair of heels for a nighttime look.

This next pencil skirt is a denim one and is such a cute look I couldn’t resist, also by J. Crew. It pairs a denim pencil skirt with a t shirt and cardigan, completed with a great necklace and platforms. I love this look for the office or lunch with your friends, (although I wouldn’t wear the ankle length nylons this model is wearing. I just can’t wrap my head around this odd trend seen on the spring runways).pencildenim

Another beautiful thing about the pencil skirt is that they work in every season, if the material is suitable. I have two of them, one in black and one in white. So, I’m covered for any season with a mere 2 skirts. How cool is that?

Closet Must-Haves, Part 5: The black blazer

By kristen, 2 June, 2010, No Comment

Black blazers are a wardrobe workhorse that will never go out of style. I always recommend that a black blazer be a staple in your outfit rotation.

Simple, clean lines are recommended for a black blazer to have lasting power in your closet. Choose a fitted one that accentuates your waistline and fits well in your shoulders. Unlike the shoulder padded heaven of the 80s, choose one without shoulder pads or one that has just a bit of padding to shape the shoulder.

You can wear black blazers in any length, such as a classic fit that hits at your hips, such as the jacket shown. You can also go for a cropped style or a boyfriend blazer (a bit longer than your rear end with cuffed sleeves). You can even pull off puffy sleeves for a more trendy look.

This black blazer is ann-taylor-jackets-crepe-femme-jacketfrom Ann Taylor, is an updated look that is very fitted and has 3/4 sleeves. I love this jacket, because it shows off layered bracelets and looks very hip and modern.I love the outfit paired with this blazer–it looks chic and well done. This is actually a suit jacket, so it truly multitasks from business to casual looks.

Wear black blazers with dresses, skirts, trousers, jeans, just about anything for that matter. A good black blazer is one item you should consider investing in, as you will wear it ALL the time.

Closet Must-Haves Part 4: A crisp white shirt

By kristen, 26 May, 2010, No Comment

There’s nothing like a classic crisp white button down that fits you like a glove. White shirts are more versatile than you’d think, and are a piece you’ll reach for over and over again in your closet. The most important thing to consider with white shirts is the fit and the crisp texture. Also make sure that it is tailored to flatter your shape, that it doesn’t gape when buttoned, and that it’s not too long where it’s difficult to tuck in.

gap white shirt

Wear your crisp white button down with jeans for a look that never goes out of style. Whether untucked or tucked in with a belt, this look never goes out of style. This shirt from the Gap contains a little lycra, which is very important for fit.

Wear a white shirt with a skirt for a versatile business or dressy look. I wore one with a poufy flowered skirt today, tucked in with a skinny belt and heels. Michelle wore a dress that had a white shirt and attached full skirt in this recent post, which had a similar look.  Also try a white shirt with a pencil skirt, chunky jewelry and heels for a classic business look.

Wear your white shirt with a pair of cuffed shorts for a polished summer look. You can wear it tucked in as you would with pants, jeans or skirts–just a more casual (but refined) look for a casual office when paired with a heeled sandal or a flat sandal for an outdoor party.

Oprah magazine voted on their favorite white shirt, and the winner is by Brooks Brothers–this one priced at $89.50 and is WRINKLE FREE!

However you decide to wear a crisp white shirt, make sure it fits and it freshly pressed and you can’t go wrong!

Shiny lips that won’t break the bank

By kristen, 25 May, 2010, No Comment

It’s amazing the beauty proucts you can find at  discount and warehouse stores. Recently, I was at Costco stocking up on all my supplies and took a look on the beauty and skincare aisle. Amongst the skin creams and razors, I found a lip gloss set by Elizabeth Arden that caught my eye. this Shine Pops collection contains 5 full size glosses for a mere $19.99! Who can resist?  I thought, why not try it, since I am admittedly a lip gloss junkie.

After I pried open the (incredibly annoying) clamshell casing, I was pleasantly surprised by how nice these glosses are! The thing I love about this set is the 5 distinct colors that come in the set (3 of them shown here–the others are shimmery gold and plum)IMG_2320. These glosses glide on nicely, have great texture, a nice shimmer and sweet scent and taste.

This Shine Pops set by Elizabeth Arden is perfect for a sheer pop of color this summer–no matter what mood you’re in there is a color to match it!

Get them before they’re gone!

Aquaphor: a multi-tasker for your skin woes

By kristen, 20 May, 2010, No Comment

I started using Aquaphor on my babies when they had diaper rash. It’s a medicated petroleum jelly that multi-tasks like crazy for many skin needs. You can buy a small tube or a big tub of it, so you always have it around. For those of you that haven’t used it, you may be wondering what can you use Aquaphor for? Here’s a quick list:

aquaphor Aquaphor is:

  • an emollient moisturizer for your lips
  • a great cuticle cream that softens and moisturizes
  • a great water-resistant barrier to avoid diaper rash for your kids
  • a softener for your rough skin patches, also good on elbows and heels

These are just a few uses for Aquaphor, which you can buy basically everywhere. It’s a great product to have in your cabinet and in your toiletry bag for traveling.  We love products that multi-task, because cabinets can get overloaded with hundreds of things if you’re not careful!

Ever heard of summer boots?

By kristen, 17 May, 2010, No Comment

I have to say…when it’s time to put my winter wardrobe away for the Spring and Summer, I do feel a pang of sadness to leave my boots behind. I really am a boot lover and would like to wear them year ’round. The hard part in doing this is that boots would make you SO hot in the summer heat! Well, this next look could just satisfy your love for boots, no matter what season!

summer boots

These, ladies, are known as summer boots!  Some of these boots are made of materials that are breatheable, such as linen. Other summer boots are made of leather, soft and supple, and are always done in NEUTRAL tones.  You should wear these summer boots with this season’s hot cuffed shorts or a flowy skirt. I’d also sport them with a sundress or a cute puffy skirt and a tank top.

These summer boots are especially useful for those late afternoon-evening outdoor parties, as they will keep your toes warm around the fire pit at night or strolling along the boardwalk in the evening breeze. Living in Colorado, this is definitely a look I can see being doable, as most nights get a little cool and breezy.

If you do get a pair of summer boots, enjoy the cute looks you can put together with them! Send us a picture! Inspire our readers!
