Let’s talk about the ever-popular trend that the celebs are all over these days…the fedora. What is a fedora, you may ask? It is a hat traditionally worn by men, and is increasing in popularity for women. I say, if you wear it with the right outfit, GO FOR IT! I am a hat girl, though, so the fedora is not too much of a stretch for me.
There are some general rules to follow with a statement hat like the fedora:
DO wear a fedora for a more casual look!
Nicole Richie gets it right on in this picture– she definitely looks like a cool mom in her fedora.
Also, try pairing one with jeans and a fitted blazer and boots for a cute, hip weekend look. I’d wear one with a solid sweater dress/tunic with leggings and boots also.
DO wear a fedora even with an appropriate business look. We’re talking a long pair of trousers with a crisp white shirt tucked in with a slim belt and possibly a fitted jacket or belted cardigan and (most definitely) heels or heeled boots. I think this would be a cute menswear-inspired ensemble for the office. To pull the menswear look off, though, be sure everything is tailored to maintain a feminine silhouette.
DON’T do what some celebs do and pair a fedora for a formal dress.
This photo showing Sharon Stone in one is a BAD example of how to wear a fedora. I think she overdid it with her outfit selection, simply too much going on. Sorry Sharon, but that just didn’t work for ya.
One last piece of advice: Go light on the accessories with a fedora, since this hat is a fashion statement all by itself. A simple stud or hoop would be all I’d do above the waist, with the exception of a solid colored scarf.
Hats are a fun way to accessorize a look; and, frankly, we all have bad hair days with our busy schedules. Might as well have an alternative to a ponytail, right?
